Chook of the Week!

Meet:

Happy Feet
DOB: 24/05/2012
Age: 15.5months
Breed: Hyline
Nicknames: Pecker
Personality: I picked up a couple of chicks at 15 days old from City Farmers. Happy Feet was one of them. She is rather on the small side and has always been that way. She earnt her nickname Pecker as she will jump up and peck any food from hands, knock dishes and bags out of hands and peck bottoms if you bend over!!! She is the first chicken to run to the box where the food is kept no matter where she is. Her hearing is amazing! She is our biggest scratcher by far, scratching up everything in her reach. She loves scratching under the lemon tree the most. She is an excellent layer, not missing many days since she started. She has laid a couple of eggs with no shell in her early days, but apart from that has had no health problems. She loves to be patted, but is not fond of the camera! She belongs to Ella.

Eggs!

We are getting 5 eggs most days now, sometimes 4. We have plenty in the fridge now, and have even had offers of friends wanting to buy some. I must do some baking though soon. I am amazed how different they all look (even up close the two brown ones are different, one has  a bump on the end) and I love how we know exactly which chook laid which egg. Makes it easy to see if any aren't laying and check if there is a problem.

Kate

We are looking forward to Kate performing at her school dance night next week! She is in the hip hop crew, the first time the school has taught hip hop. These tee-shirts are their practice attire! She looks tired in this photo as Wednesdays are a very long day with 3 x hip hop classes, of course school, PE class, and singing!

This girl just loves to dance, she does it all the time even on the trampoline! We love to watch her. We love to see what she has been working so hard towards. Those early mornings, late nights and extra practices all make it worthwhile when we see her up on a stage!

Jonah's Birthday

We took Jonah his present down today - we had waited until Phil was home as it required some assembling. He seemed to love it, and I'm all for kids getting outside more for fresh air and exercise. All the kids enjoyed having a go, which I'm sure you will agree from the pictures!

The trampoline is still as popular as ever, and the kids played happily for ages on it!

Jonah chose a Dora cake for his birthday! Funny boy. When Ella was 4 she also had a Dora cake, when Kate was 4, she had a Spiderman cake!, Ruby had an Igglepiggle one!

Naughty Chicken!

As mentioned in the previous post about Phoebe and coming inside, I got a heck of a fright this morning when I left the door open and was getting something out of the kitchen cupboard and then heard her (and Ebony-Rose following) jump up onto the bar stool! Seriously, they have a cheek! Sorry the photo isn't the best, but was keen to get them back outside! You will have to look very hard to see Ebony-Rose down by Phoebe's legs!

Chook of the Week!

Meet ...

Phoebe
DOB: 22nd February 2012
Age: 18months
Breed: Isa Brown
Nicknames: Pheebs, Sweet Girl, Sweets
Personality: We swapped Coco (our rooster) for Phoebe. She settled in well, and started laying the next day. She lays almost every day, but I am always glad when she misses a day to give her body a rest. She became very ill last Christmas evening and we thought for sure she was not going to make it, but through share TLC, she bounced back after a few weeks. She is nearly always the first to jump in the vege garden when let out, she is the first to run over when the hose is turned on for fresh water, she is the ONLY one to come inside of her own accord when the back door is left open (that happened when she was ill and Kate let her) She likes short pats/cuddles, and is a real clucky type - gently clucking all day long. She lays dark brown eggs. She belongs to Kate.

Getting ready for Spring!

With just 10 days before spring officially starts in Australia, we made a start today getting the back ready for sitting out there and enjoying the rays! There was some colour added (I do love pansies!) seeds to sort, chairs and cushions to clean, cobwebs to get down, tables to oil, new shoots to admire. The temperature was 20 degrees, just perfect for me! I am looking forward to getting out there again over the next month and enjoying the change of season.
